Stand inside Sacred Heart Catholic Church in downtown Tampa and find yourself surrounded by stained glass and murals on the walls and ceiling. Pan left to see the main altar up front. The choir loft is behind you.
Dedicated on Jan. 15,1905, the Sacred Heart building combines several styles of architecture but is predominantly Romanesque.
Sacred Heart has been renovated more than once over the years but
still looks much as it did in 1905.
The downtown Tampa structure, at Twiggs Street and Florida Avenue, is home to a Jesuit-run Catholic parish that had been established downtown in 1860 in a smaller building called St. Louis Church.
The current parish serves at least 1,400 families spread across the Tampa Bay area.
